Abbott gives in to costings demand

Сообщение Ramzes » 27 авг 2010, 09:05

By Sarah Collerton

Opposition Leader Tony Abbott has backed down and will submit his policies for costing so three independent MPs will have access to Treasury advice on the impact of both Labor and the Coalition's election promises.

Independent MPs Rob Oakeshott, Tony Windsor and Bob Katter, who are expected to hold the balance of power in a hung parliament, had requested access to the economic advice normally reserved for the incoming government.

Mr Abbott yesterday objected to the independents getting an economic briefing on his policies and refused to submit them to Treasury.

The Coalition said it would not hand over its costings until an AFP investigation into a Treasury leak was resolved.

But Prime Minister Julia Gillard says Mr Abbott has reversed his stance and will meet the independents' request by submitting his policies for costing.

Ms Gillard says Mr Abbott did not bring up the police probe in their correspondence, but he did raise some concerns.

"Mr Abbott raised some concerns about where information might go arising from this process," she said.

"I have indicated to Mr Abbott it is my view that the independents should be able to participate in these briefings. What they say publicly about the information obtained is then a matter for them."

Ms Gillard says she will offer "absolute transparency" to the independents, but she is not so sure about Mr Abbott.

"Is he intending to be transparent with the Australian public or try and hide his costings - that's a question that needs to be directed to him," she said.

Ms Gillard says she wants to change caretaker conventions so she can meet the independents' demand, which would see senior public servants give them the economic advice.

She says she is happy she can meet the independents' request.

"Mr Oakeshott, Mr Windsor [and] Mr Katter have sought this information in circumstances where their votes and attitudes may be critical to who forms the next government in this country," she said.

"I think it was appropriate that each of them, where they will be asked to guarantee supply, seek to have full info on costings and budget figures.

"In these circumstances, I believed it was appropriate to facilitate the request of the independents - I'm glad we seemed to be able to work our way through to an end point where their request will be facilitated."

Ms Gillard also says she held "positive and constructive" talks this morning with Greens Leader Bob Brown and the incoming member for Melbourne, Adam Bandt.

Economic growth smashes forecasts

Сообщение Ramzes » 02 сен 2010, 05:50

Australia's economic growth has passed all but the most optimistic forecasts, with the economy expanding 3.3 per cent over the past financial year.

Growth over the June quarter came in at 1.2 per cent, which is the biggest quarterly economic growth in three years, according to the Bureau of Statistics figures.

First quarter GDP growth was also revised up to 0.7 per cent from an original reading of 0.5 per cent.

Economist forecasts in a survey by Bloomberg ranged from June quarter GDP growth of 0.7 per cent up to 1.3 per cent.

The median prediction among the 23 economists surveyed was for GDP to rise 0.9 per cent for the quarter and 2.8 per cent over the year to the end of June.

The Australian dollar gained around a quarter of a cent immediately after the data was released, rising from about 89.5 US cents to 89.78.

The positive figures also supported morning gains on the Australian share market, with the All Ordinaries index bouncing about 7 points immediately after the data came out, and rising further since.

The benchmark indices have defied a flat lead from Wall Street, with the All Ordinaries 1.8 per cent higher at 4,518 by 12:47pm (AEST) and the ASX 200 up 84 points to 4,488.

'Goldilocks economy'

Economists also liked the figure and Joshua Williamson from Citi says it strikes a good balance of growth without putting too much pressure on interest rates.

"This is a better figure than pretty much anybody was expecting in the markets today, and it's a fantastic result for the Australian economy," he told ABC finance reporter Rebecca Hyam.

He also says it is a positive result for Julia Gillard in her attempts to retain power.

"I think the Government will be particularly pleased with this result, given where we are with respect to the election at the moment," he said.

"There's always a political dimension to these figures and, certainly, the Government could use these figures as evidence that its economic management over the time has probably helped the economy move forward.

"Certainly these figures build upon the stimulus measures that were designed to get Australia through the GFC."

He says the detail of the figures shows the economy seems to have hit a sweet spot where price pressures are low despite solid growth.

"What we're seeing here is an economy that's moving back to trend - it's a little bit higher than where the Reserve Bank thought it would be, but the inflation metrics that have come out with today's GDP result show that that shouldn't be a concern for the Reserve Bank," Mr Williamson said.

"So I think what we've got here is a continuation of this Goldilocks economy, where we've got a good stable growth rate, inflation for the time being appears to be under control, so households and businesses shouldn't be too concerned that the Reserve Bank is going to pull the trigger any time soon."

Commonwealth Bank chief economist Michael Blythe agrees the Reserve Bank is likely to remain on the sidelines for at least the next few months because of the current global economic jitters.

"It highlights just how different the Australian economy is from the rest of the world," he told Reuters.

He says the Government is likely to be pleased that private sector spending appears to be picking up just as its stimulus spending tapers off.

"The most encouraging sign is some indication that the private sector is coming back in - a lot of the past 12 months has been a public sector story and we really need the private sector to sign off on the recovery story," he added.

"The consumer caution angle that was one of the domestic risks appears to be evaporating pretty quickly."

Mr Williamson agrees that this month's growth was more broadly based than previous quarters, with public spending playing a smaller role and consumer spending growing at a much stronger than expected 1.6 per cent in the quarter, up from 0.5 per cent in the three months to March.

"What we are seeing though is private sector consumption has grown, accelerated a little bit, but dwelling investment has now finally turned the corner and that grew by a very strong 5 per cent," he said.

"The other thing that's been very heartening to see is that net exports - that is exports less imports - has actually added to growth for the first time in a year.

"So fairly broad sector growth - what we'd like to see going forward is a continuation of that transfer away from public sector stimulus to more private sector growth, and when that happens we'll know that that journey's complete."

Polls show support for Labor minority government

Сообщение Ramzes » 04 сен 2010, 14:43

Updated 8 hours 53 minutes ago
Both polls favor Labor's Julia Gillard to form a minority government over the Coalition's Tony Abbott.

Two new opinion polls show the majority of voters want three key independent MPs to back Labor to form a minority government.

Bob Katter, Rob Oakeshott and Tony Windsor will spend the weekend considering which party to support to form government.

As the trio deliberate, a Newspoll survey - published by News Limited - show 47 per cent want the independents to back Labor.

The poll of 1,134 voters, conducted on Monday and Tuesday, shows 39 per cent want the Coalition to be given the chance to form government.

Meanwhile, a JWS Research poll, published in Fairfax newspapers, found 37 per cent want the country trio to support Labor.

The poll of 4,192 voters also showed support was lower for the Coalition, with 31 per cent of voters wanting the independents to side with Opposition Leader Tony Abbott.

But for 26 per cent of voters, the preferred option was to go back to the polls.

The poll found that if there was another election, the Coalition would have a small lead in the two-party-preferred vote.

However, it also showed that another election would result in a hung parliament again.

The three key independents have spent the week getting briefings from senior government bureaucrats, as well as Labor and Coalition frontbenchers.

They will not make their decision until they have finalised a document on parliamentary reforms and that could still take some days, but they do plan to decide early next week.

Federal Parliament is still deadlocked with Labor guaranteed 74 votes and the Coalition 73.

This week Labor gained the support of Melbourne Greens MP Adam Bandt and the Tasmanian independent Andrew Wilkie.
